Requirements for the Student Direct Stream

Documentation: Alongside your study permit application, you need to provide the following documentation:


  • Acceptance Letter: An acceptance letter from a designated postsecondary learning institution in accordance with section 211.1 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR).

  • Tuition Fee Payment: Evidence of payment for the first year of study at the designated postsecondary learning institution mentioned in the acceptance letter.

  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC): A GIC of CAN$10,000 to ensure financial stability during your stay in Canada.

  • Medical Examination: As per section 29 of IRPR, you must undergo a medical examination.

  • Police Certificate: A valid police certificate to demonstrate your good character and background.

  • Academic Records: Recent transcripts from secondary or postsecondary school.

  • Language Proficiency: Provide the result of a language test as described in these Instructions. Accepted tests include: IELTS General, CELPIP General, TEF Canada, TCF Canada, IELTS Academic, CAEL, Pearson PTE Academic, TEF - 5 épreuves, TCF - tout public, and TOEFL iBT Test.

  • Additional Requirement for Quebec: If you plan to study in Quebec, you must also obtain a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration.


Please note that the language tests must be taken in-person, and online remotely proctored tests will not be accepted under the SDS Program.



Timelines and Processing: Key Dates to Remember


Applications submitted with valid language test results will take effect August 12, 2023 Any applications received by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration after the effective date that do not meet the specified conditions will not be eligible for priority processing.
